Would you like to learn how to make paper and ribbon bunting and picnic-inspired cupcake toppers for your summer parties? If you're in the Leavenworth, Kansas area and would like to join me (Michaele Sommerville) and Sheila Rumney for some papercrafting picnic-y and polka-dotty fun, call or drop by The Peacock Cafe (phone: 913-651-9914) to register today!

The class registration, materials and instruction fee is $30. Participants will make and take party bunting and a set of cupcake toppers. Don't be surprised if you use these party items as templates for other celebrations and holidays throughout the year: 4th of July, birthdays, weddings, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, Valentine's, Easter... the possibilities are endless!

Please bring scissors (for cutting paper) and a low temp glue gun and sticks. I'll provide the paper, ribbon, buttons, fabric, lollipop sticks and instructions!

Farmstead is excited to have The Barn Artists here too.... Kathy Truders (potter) began her journey with pottery in
the late 1980s. Her love of horses has been lifelong. She feels forturnate
to be able to combine her two passions, horses and pottery,
at her home in rural Platte County, Missouri. Both provide constant
sources of joy, fascination, inspiration, and unceasing challenges
in her quest for knowledge and improvement of skills. The beauty,
strength, and grace of the horse are the blessings she strives to
incorporate into her pottery. Centering, shaping, and understanding
the clay are what she brings from her pottery studio to her work
in the field or the arena with her horses. In her journey, Kathy has
found that along with all of her great human teachers, these two--horses and clay--are wonderful teachers as
well.

Carl Wilson (multi-media artist), when not creating or
learning a new media, fills in the gaps by teaching beginning
horseback riding and working around the Wild Rose Equine Center
in northern Platte County with his wife Robbin. Carl is a self
taught artist and enjoys working in leather, woodcarving, and most
recently color-pencil drawings. He believes enjoying what you are
doing and continually adding to the pot of knowledge keeps things
interesting. After a 30-plus year career of riding horses, travelling
the country, before settling in rural Platte County, Carl is beginning
to concentrate more on his art than his horsemanship these days.
His studio at Wild Rose offers up carvings in relief and sculpture, both natural and color-enhanced, plus drawings
of whatever interests him that day. Tree branches found on his 60 acres will become an occasional walking
stick through the artistry of Carl’s tools. Horsemanship learned over the years has been an asset, Carl has
found, in the discipline and creativity needed in the artist’s world.

Bill Hankins (photographer) retired from teaching photography
and journalism after 30 years in education. He now freelances
photos and feature stories for The Platte County Landmark. In 2008,
he was inducted into the Missouri Photojournalism Hall of Fame.
Bill’s Walking in the Light Images are what he calls his “assignments
from within.” He enjoys shooting the landscapes and peoples
of the American West, but has concentrated in more recent years on
documenting the lives and places of home, Platte County, Missouri.
Philosophically, writer Henry David Thoreau inspires his shooting
style. When Thoreau wrote about “a moment’s monument” in his
journals, he was not referring to photography, but rather a way of living in the here and now, “to improve the
nick of time, to stand on the meeting of two eternities, the past and future, which is precisely the present moment.”
“What better definition of a photograph is there?” Hankins has written. “First with film and now digitally,
I have tried to prepare myself so that at whatever shutter speed I can capture a monument to a moment that
will in some way enhance the human experience--to remind us, to enlighten us, to reveal to us, to entertain us.”

Farmstead is working on new workshops. Each month, we will be bringing new inspiration, new creativity and opportunities to learn and connect with others.

Discover your 'inner artist' as Cathy Kline brings classes on painting. Kathy Truder, pottery artist, will be teaching pottery techniques. Sheila Rumney of Blessed and Distressed will be bringing your more mixed media art classes, from soldering, to jewelry making to ephemera and paper arts. Ann of a Vintage Mood, will also be bringing some artistic classes with her refined vintage style. We will be adding more instructors to this line up!!

Just look at her lovely primitive style.Here's a little bio about Susan: My business started in High School when I started making hearts from a antique quilt and I was hooked. As the years went by, I got hit with the antique bug and started doing antique shows, Then I decided to try one of our local antique mall and have been doing that ever since. I love all things primitive and have started making more primitive folk art animal and things that are stained and distressed for that worn primitive look. All the primitive handmade items are all made by me and many are hand sewn for that primitive look..

The first day of SPRING
is just around the corner ~ March 20 to be exact!
And we have planned 2 fabulous get away days to kick off the season. Atelier {Studio}, A Spring Gathering is a weekend full of shopping, creating and connecting. As you look over the array of workshops offered, imagine spending the entire day at the beautiful and serene Farmstead setting doing the things you love. We know you'll find one or more that will be just the thing to "inspire your inner muse."

10 AM ~ Doors Open for ALL-DAY SHOPPING and WORKSHOPS

10AM - 12PM Jewelry Redux

We will be combining vintage bits and baubles from old jewelry finds and pairing it with wire wrapping techniques and chain to create one-of-a-kind jewelry art piece with history. Workshop includes a wide array of vintage bits and baubles, vintage key, wire and findings. No two pieces will be the same. Students are encouraged to bring their own bits and baubles from Grandma’s jewelry box to add to their necklace. $50 class fee

12-1 PM Time for Shopping, Conversation and a Scrumptious Lunch from

$12 includes your choice of Cobb Salad or Chicken Salad Sandwich
and beverages. Pre-order your lunch on registration form below.

1-3 PM Feather your Nest Collage Assemblage

Come and learn collage and distressing techniques to transform a handmade wooden shadowbox into a showcase for your nest that we will be creating and filling with vintage items. Included in your workshop is a vintage tintype photo, vintage buttons, bits of vintage lace, old key and vintage ephemera/sheet music to complete. Vintage bauble is included in workshop price, butWorkshop number is limited due to the vintage items used, so sign up fast for this one. Students are encouraged to bring their own small items to uniquely make it their own. $50 class fee

1-3 PM Dew-Kissed or Butterfly-Kissed Burlap Rose Pin

Burlap and bling combine to create a fun tea rose pin to adorn your favorite jean jacket lapel, handbag or pillow. We'll use burlap, wire and a pin back to fashion the rose. The "Dew-Kissed" Rose will sparkle with large and small vintage rhinestone embellishments; the "Butterfly-Kissed" Rose will wear a beaded wire butterfly that you will create using vintage pearls, rhinestones and some new beads. Choose Dew-Kissed or Butterfly-Kissed. $30 class fee

3:15-5:15 PM Sweet & Charming Soldering Class

Come learn techniques to capture your unique “you” between glass and solder. We will learn easy techniques to help you create 2 beautiful and unique solder pieces. Learn easy techniques on attaching dangles and jump rings from Sheila who was taught by the leading soldering artist Sally Jean Alexander. Vintage images will be provided to choose from, but students are encouraged to bring their own printed images to capture under 1” x 1” and 1” x 3” glass. $50 class fee

1:00 pm – 3:00 pm In the heart of winter, we will use wire and vintage embellishments to make a decorative family tree and creating lovely embellishments to add to make your tree unique.Class fee includes product to make the tree, vintage thread spoons, wire, key, crystal, vintage papers and beads. All materials shown are included, but you are welcome and encouraged to add your own buttons, ephemera, photos and findings.

2010 marks a New Year, possibly a new career, a new path just waiting to be discovered. This is a new beginning... a journal about you. We will be combing vintage album page, beautiful old papers, and vintage looking papers, Glimmer Mist, wonderful embellishments and fun techniques to make your journal your own. To make this truly unique, just like you are, we encourage you to bring your own old letters, papers and embellishments to personalize.
